CentralWorld is a shopping plaza and complex in Bangkok, Thailand. It is the ninth largest shopping mall in the world in 2023. The complex, which includes a hotel and office tower, is owned by the Central Pattana Company.

After three years of design and renovation, CentralWorld was expanded to a 5,900,000-square-foot shopping mall and 8,900,000-square-foot complex, surpassing even its nearest rival Siam Paragon in terms of size.

Owned and developed by SM Prime Holdings, the owner and developer of the largest mall chain in the Philippines, its land area is 67 hectares, providing a total floor area of approximately 6,349,530 square feet. The area attracts an average footfall of around 200,000 people per day.

After the opening of SM Mall, several smaller shopping malls nearby were closed, such as Pearl Plaza and Uniwide Coastal Mall, both located in Barangay Tambo, Parañaque. However, this is changing with the rise of other malls and similar structures such as Ayala Mall Manila Bay and W Mall.

The mall includes a 5-star hotel, a general shopping mall with over 750 retail outlets, a museum, a hypermarket, restaurants, airline offices, an indoor theme park.

It also has a cinema, an amusement park, a concert hall, an education centre and a food court. with a roller coaster and bumper cars, an International Financial Center (IFC) and a World Trade Center (WTC), and an entertainment centre with seven cinema screens and a fair complex.

03. South China Mall

The New South China Mall is a massive shopping complex in Dongguan, China. It is the third among the largest shopping malls in the world in both gross leasable area and total area.

South China Mall opened in 2005 and for more than 10 years it remained mostly empty as few merchants had signed up, leading to it being labelled a dead mall. However, it failed to attract enough customers and tenants, and soon became mostly vacant and abandoned.

The mall has been undergoing renovation and remodelling since 2015, and parts of it have reopened with new stores, restaurants, and entertainment venues. However, large parts of the mall are still vacant and unused.

The New South China Mall is an example of how a grand vision can turn into a massive waste of resources and space. It is also a reminder of the challenges and risks involved in building mega-projects in China’s rapidly changing economy.

02. IOI City Mall

IOI City Mall is a large shopping mall located in Sepang district, Selangor, Malaysia, developed by IOI Properties Group Berhad. It has been promoted as a “middle-upper class mall” to attract approximately 1.8 million people.

The mall’s second phase opened on 25 August 2022, making it the largest shopping mall in Malaysia, surpassing 1 Utama, as well as the largest mall in Southeast Asia and the second largest shopping mall in the world in 2023.

IOI City Mall has 2,500,000 square feet of retail space for both phases, with over 650 stores. Phase 1 of IOI City Mall opened in November 2014 with a net lettable area of 1,500,000 square feet over three levels with 350 tenants.

The Phase 1 section of the mall also includes District 21, a post-apocalypse-themed amusement park, two ice skating rinks, an edutainment exhibition space with an “indoor living planet” concept, and a Golden Screen Cinema with GSC Max and 4DX hall.

More than 1,200 contractors and 25,000 workers participated in the construction of Iran Mall. This facility is owned by Ayandeh Bank. The original idea of building such a large complex came from the famous Iranian entrepreneur Ali Ansari, who has also been the chief executive of the construction of Iran Mall.

Iran Mall aims to provide a comprehensive shopping and entertainment experience for visitors. Some of its features include high-end and international brand stores, a large indoor amusement park, a cinema complex, an ice skating rink and various dining options.
